Legion: @Taloncosplay
Huntress: @Grave_dirt
Victim: Aaron
This location was chosen by Tyler (Taloncosplay) and Jess (Grave_dirt) and can be found down on the Gold Coast. I had never been before, but after seeing photos of the space from the cosplayers, I was able to create a storyboard.
The project was different from anything I had done before in that I was essentially creating 2 of the same thing. This was due to the time crunch for when the shoot day was finalised. However, it was a time-saving method that also fit within the genre; it was like choosing a character for the actual video game.
With the storyboards and the cosplayers doing final touches while I filmed the B-roll, production actually had a very quick turnaround. Which was very good for me considering the long drive from the Gold Coast to North Brisbane.
I had never worked with Jess or Aaron before and I’ve since learnt from many conventions that not every cosplayer is comfortable in front of the camera. I believe that these experiences I’d had with cosplayers who didn’t know me built important skills for directing. Especially for these situations.
You can find an article I wrote about working with new talent on LinkedIn.
Even though I’d plotted the storyboard and shot list, it was while working with the talent that we discovered some additional shots. I really do believe in collaborating with your talent and encouraging these moments in order to create the best content you can!
After completing the edits, which you can find below, you’ll see that there are very few differences other than the murderous villains. It was a strange method to speed-produce two videos, but it’s a process that I’d recommend using for video game characters.
